The Most Affordable Michelin Star Restaurant in NYC: Tim Ho Wan

Tim Ho Wan has finally arrived in NYC! The original location in of this Hong Kong-based dim sum chain has earned the title as one of the world's most affordable Michelin Star restaurants.

The New York location is their first location in the U.S. Since I was in the neighborhood, I had to stop by to see how it compared to the locations in Hong Kong.

The prices are reasonable and range from $3.75-$5.50 per dish. We ordered a wide range of dim sum: steamed shrimp dumplings (har gow), deep fried eggplant with shrimp, steamed rice roll with minced beef, steamed shrimp and chives dumplings, and baked buns with BBQ pork.

The star of the restaurant is the baked buns with BBQ pork. Dare I say, life-changing? Eat the baked buns while they're hot and fresh. The top layer is flakey, and the BBQ pork filling melts in your mouth.  Once you take a bite of their BBQ pork buns, you will never see pork buns the same again.

Pro-tip: If you don't want to wait in the 1-2 hour line, go straight to the bar and order BBQ pork buns to-go.

As for the rest of the dishes, I'm sad to say they were mediocre. The taste and quality of the other dishes were comparable to other dim sum establishments in New York.

However, the shrimp dumplings were well made. You can judge the culinary skill of a dim sum chef if the shrimp dumplings are sturdy enough not to break when picked up with chopsticks. The skin should be thin and translucent, and the dumpling should not stick to the paper, container, or other shrimp dumplings in the basket.

If you're looking for a unique dessert, try the sweet osmanthus jelly with goji berry. The jelly contains osmanthus, which are tiny golden flowers found mainly in Eastern Asia. The flowers have health benefits that help digestion, support the respiratory system, and promotes smooth and radiant complexion.

Overall, Tim Ho Wan in New York is worth visiting, especially if you don't want to fly halfway around the world to try their baked BBQ pork buns.
